YouTube was founded by 3 people, Steve Chen, Chad Hurley and Jawed Karim. Chad Hurley is a design student while Steve Chen and Jawed Karem are Computer Science students.
They met each other while working at a startup company that later became known as Paypal, which was also founded by infamous Elon Musk (Tesla / Space X).
They got their original idea for building Youtube website when they found it difficult to upload a video into websites during that time.
In 2005, they acquired a venture capital startup for a technology company. They got $11.5 million from Sequoia Capital and another $ 8 million from Artist Capital Management in 2005 and 2006.
Did you know that the first office of Youtube is just a small room above a Pizzeria and Japanese Restaurant in San Matteo, California? Yes, that’s where it started.
The Youtube.com domain name is active as of February 14, 2005, and the site takes several months to set up. Jawed Karim’s video ‘Met at the zoo’ is the first ever video uploaded on April 23, 2005. Below is the video:
The site was opened to the public in May 2015. The first video to reach 1 million views was Ronaldinho’s video showing his football / soccer playing skills being uploaded by Nike as an ads and from then on, they were already seeing great advertising potential for the website.
The site is getting more and more investment and officially launched in December 2005, at which time it had reached 8 million views in one day. As of July 2006, they already have 65,000 videos uploaded every day and Youtube has reach 100 million views daily, making them the most dominant video site in the world.
In October 2006, Google Inc announced the acquisition of YouTube shares and the official agreement saw a total of $ 1.65 billion be finalized on November 13, 2006 which was one of the largest acquisitions records of that time.
That’s all of the ‘basic’ history of Youtube. 🙂
